Abstract

Introduction: Liver cirrhosis is a disease with a high mortality burden in the world and also in Cuba. Caring for this patient demands careful organization of hospital services.

Objectives: to describe the main clinical characteristics of a series of cirrhotic patients to provide evidence that allows us to review and update the institutional protocols and procedures that guide the care of these patients.

Method: A longitudinal descriptive observational study was carried out at the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja General Teaching Hospital in Baracoa, during the period 2017-2020. The sample consisted of 86 patients over 18 years of age, with liver cirrhosis of any etiology and who gave their consent to participate in the study. Demographic and clinical variables were measured. Descriptive statistical techniques were applied for data processing.

Results: There was a predominance of the male sex (52 cases, 60.5%). Average for age 54 years, higher frequency in the 40-59 year old group. (38 patients, 44.2%). Ascites was the predominant clinical sign (27.9%). He (43%) had esophageal varices. The majority in Child-Pugh B stage (52 patients, 60.4%). During the one-year follow-up, 28 patients (32.5%) died, all due to complications of cirrhosis. Of the deceased, 22 cases, 25.5% in Child-Pugh stage C.

Conclusions: In this institution we must pay attention to mortality and carry out health actions towards the prevention of cirrhosis.
