Experience of the use of the endoscopic video capsule in the diagnosis of digestive tract disorders

Introduction: The endoscopic videocapsule has become a first-line technique for the study of diseases of the small intestine.
Objective: To describe the experience of the use of video capsule endoscopy in the diagnosis of digestive tract disorders.
Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the period from April 2015 to March 2016 at the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) Manta, Manab?, Ecuador. The sample was represented by 39 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: The examination was performed in 39 patients, where the male sex predominated and the age group older than 60 years, digestive bleeding of obscure origin, chronic anemia and abdominal pain represented the most frequent indications. 36 findings were detected in 34 patients and five of them were normal. Angiodysplasias, inflammatory lesions and tumors were the most diagnosed with 8 (23.5%), 7 (20.6%) and 5 (14.7%) lesions respectively. Most of the affections were located in the small intestine (21; 58.3%). Capsule retention (2.5%) was the only complication reported in this study.
Conclusions: Videocapsule endoscopy has proven to be a very useful technique for the diagnosis of small bowel lesions.
