Abstract

Introduction: Colonoscopy allows visualization of the colon and terminal ileum. Poor preparation prevents adequate exploration, reduces the detection of lesions and lengthens the procedure time.

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of colonoscopy preparation in pediatric patients.

Method: Descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study, with an analytical component. Universe: pediatric patients, with an indication for colonoscopy, seen at the Institute of Gastroenterology during January 2020 to December 2021. Sample: 58 patients.

Results: The average age was 12.84 years, 18 female and 40 male. The predominant defecation habit was diarrhea (56.7%). The most common reason for indicating colonoscopy was chronic diarrhea (25.9%) and abdominal pain (24.3%). The cecal intubation rate was 100%, one patient reported nausea during preparation. The endoscopic diagnosis was: lesions suggestive of lymphoid hyperplasia (55.2%), normal colonoscopies (22.4%) and inflammatory bowel diseases (15.5%). The quality of cleaning was: excellent (62.1%), good (31.0%) of the cases.   The age of the patients influenced the quality of the preparation (p=0.01). Sex, defecation habit, reason for indication and endoscopic diagnosis were not related to the quality of the preparation. Conclusions: Preparation with PEG 3350 with electrolytes was effective in most cases, achieving adequate tolerance and a cecal intubation rate according to the established quality criteria. There was no association between colon cleansing and the variables studied, except with the age of the patients.
