Abstract

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common neoplasms in our society and when detected in early stages it usually has a good prognosis. That is why population screening programs can make a significant difference in early detection and therefore, in the mortality associated with this neoplasm. Within the screening programs, the nursing staff is very involved from the first contact with the patient. Collaboration and coordination between the physician and the nurse is the only way to ensure the success of these programs. The nursing staff constitutes a point of reference for many patients who seek a correct and precise recommendation to resolve the doubts and concerns that arise after joining these prevention programs. The nurse intervenes in the emotional support at the time of screening test positivity diagnosis, in the information and support in treatment decision making, in the preparation for colonoscopy and finally, in the evaluation and continuous care during and after colonoscopy.
