Gastrointestinal manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease of autoimmune etiology. The gastrointestinal manifestations of this condition were first observed by William Osler in 1895. They occur in 40% of these patients and can be potentially fatal or severe. We present the case of a 13-year-old female patient who presented with skin lesion, right lower quadrant abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and an approximate weight loss of 10 kg. During the evaluation, gastric polyserositis and vasculitis were found. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy findings were nonspecific; the most frequently described finding was the presence of ulcers, and the histological changes were predominantly submucosal, which complicated the diagnosis. Computed tomography angiography could be a useful tool for establishing the diagnosis of vasculitis. This is an uncommon condition that can affect other organs.
