Abstract

Blastocystis spp. is a microorganism of controversial pathogenicity, taxonomy, and treatment. We present the case of an adult with chronic diarrhea, whose stool examination only revealed infection with Blastocystis spp. He was prescribed several treatments that failed to eliminate this microorganism, except for the use of ketoconazole, which achieved total remission of symptoms and eradication of the agent from the patient's feces. Ketoconazole appears to be an option for the treatment of symptomatic Blastocystis infection that has not been resolved with other drugs. However, further studies must be carried out to propose its generalization.
