Abstract

Introduction: Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is associated with a detriment in quality of life. Scientific evidence of the impact of direct-acting antivirals on health-related quality of life comes mostly from clinical trials. The aim of the present study is to identify the effect of sustained virological response on health-related quality of life in patients with chronic HCV infection in the real-life setting.

Methods: a prospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted in chronic hepatitis C infected patients treated with DAAs between January 2019 and December 2021 at the Institute of Gastroenterology. The results of the hepatitis C specific chronic liver disease questionnaire, functional assessment for the treatment of chronic disease-fatigue and the work productivity and activity impairment questionnaire - specific health problem were recorded, as well as clinical-demographic parameters at baseline and 12 weeks after the end of treatment.

Results: 56 patients were evaluated with mean age 57.4 +/- 8.3 years, 20 (35.7%) men. Total scores (before versus after treatment) of hepatitis C specific chronic liver disease questionnaire: (4.67 +/- 1.12 vs 5.21 +/- 1.18; p=0.0062), functional assessment for the treatment of chronic disease-fatigue:(115.8 +/- 22.5 vs 124.2 +/- 19.7; p=0.0217) and work productivity and activity impairment questionnaire: (0.420 +/- 0.302 vs 0.323 +/- 0.290; p=0.0138) improved at the end of treatment.

Conclusions: New direct-acting antivirals, in patients with hepatitis C, achieve high response rates, and improve early and overall health-related quality of life.
