Clinical expressivity of liver disease in patients with alcohol addiction

Introduction: Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of liver disease in Cuba.
Objective: To determine the frequency with which alcoholic liver disease appears and its clinical expression in a group of patients with addiction and high alcohol consumption.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study with alcoholic patients attended in Psychiatry consultation of the University Hospital "General Calixto García" between September 2018 and February 2021, who presented clinical elements that made suspect hepatic affectation, so they were evaluated in the Gastroenterology service of that institution.
Results: 99 patients were studied, all with more than 2 points in the CAGE questionnaire and with high-risk behaviors or alcohol dependence. There was a predominance of male sex (91.9%), mean age was 53.1±12.7 years. Alcohol consumption was reported for more than 20 years (mean 26.7±12.2 years). The most frequent school level was secondary school (53.5%). Cirrhosis was diagnosed in 77 (77.8%), most of them (49; 63.6%) in Child stage B. The clinical presentation was with edema (edema, edema, edema, edema, edema, edema, edema, edema). The clinical presentation was edema (63.6%), jaundice (57.6%) and ascites (49.5%). The clinical laboratory showed inversion of the ALAT/ASAT index and increased GGT GGT (median 95 U/l). Esophageal varices were present in 62.3% of cirrhotics.
Conclusions: most of the patients with alcohol addiction present advanced liver disease, at the cirrhosis stage and with the complications that derive from it.
