Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the main diagnostic and therapeutic means in the different biliopancreatic diseases. Being an invasive procedure, it brings with it risks that increase morbidity and mortality in patients in whom it is practiced.
Objective: To characterize ERCP and identify complications arising from the procedure.
Method: A descriptive and retrospective study of patients who underwent ERCP at the Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Hospital during December 2020 to December 2021 was conducted. We reviewed ERCP reports of a total of 100 procedures in 75 patients.
Results: Of the 75 patients evaluated, it was found that 40% belonged to the male sex and 60% to the female. The average age was 60.6 years, a minimum age of 19 years and a maximum of 91 years, with the age groups between 51 and 70 years being the most prevalent with 54.7%. The main therapeutics used were the sphincterotomy of the VBP (40%) and the placement of prostheses in the VBP (29%). Only 3 complications occurred, of which 2 were post-ERCP pancreatitis.
Conclusions: ERCP is a safe and effective procedure in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases of the biliopancreatic tree, with minimal complications.
