Tumors of the upper digestive tract diagnosed by endoscopy at the Military Hospital of Matanzas

Introduction: Neoplasia of the upper digestive tract is considered an entity of aggressive behavior. In the military hospital "Dr. Mario Mu?oz Monroy" there has been an increase of it since 2017.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was carried out with the endoscopic reports of patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in the Gastroenterology service of said hospital, with the diagnosis of these neoplasms, in the period from January 2017 to January 2019, with the aim of determining the behavior of these neoplasms. The universe consisted of 38 patients whose biopsy confirmed the entity. We studied variables such as: age group, sex, race, risk factors, symptoms or signs, location of the neoplasm and histological diagnosis.
Results: Esophageal and stomach neoplasms were the most frequent in the 61 to 70 years age group (31.5%) and in the male sex (57.8%). Weight loss was the common symptom in all neoplasms (81.5%). The most frequent traditional risk factors were smoking and alcoholism (55.2%) and consumption of irritants (81.5%). In esophagus, squamous cell carcinoma predominated (26.3%), while in stomach and duodenum were adenocarcinoma.
Conclusions: Malignant neoplasms of the upper digestive tract occurred at advanced ages of life. All patients were exposed to risk factors. Symptoms or signs and histologic diagnosis were related to tumor location.
