Extraintestinal manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease in children and adolescents
Keywords:
inflammatory bowel disease, extraintestinal manifestations, children and adolescentsAbstract
Introduction: Extraintestinal manifestations (EIM) frequently occur in pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can appear in almost 30% before diagnosis is established and are associated with a more severe course of the disease when compared with adult patients.
Objective: To review the most important aspects in relation to the epidemiology of EIM in children and adolescents with IBD.
Methods: The information search was carried out over a period of four months (July to November 2020) and the words were used: inflammatory bowel disease, extraintestinal manifestations, children and adolescents, case history, risk factors, all in English.
Results: The frequency of extraintestinal manifestations in inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) that begins in pediatric age is presented in detail according to epidemiological aspects and forms of presentation, based on publications from different population cohorts. consensus guides and review articles on the topic.
Conclusions: The review allowed for an update on EIMs associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) of pediatric onset that the attending physician may suspect, especially due to the adverse impact on the quality of life of the patients.
